Queensferry Residence – Fireplace Mantel
This custom designed contemporary style mantel adds a new level of detail to the existing 20 foot tall stone fireplace. Construction involved both wood and metal fabrication. The brackets are cut from 3/8″ plate steel using a plasma cutter. Each bracket is made up of five components, all welded together to form a complete bracket. The wood is reclaimed heart pine from an old factory. It was resawn into varying lengths and widths then layered to create its final stairstep shape. It was finished in a dark brown stain for contrast and to coordinate with the natural stone and existing room trim. The addition of the mantel brakes up an overwhelming amount of stone with an architectural feature that coordinates with other features around the home. It also provides a place to add a pop of color and display decorative items.
